professionals that has been elected by both the American Institute of
Architects (FAIA) and American Institute of Certified Planners (FAICP)

____________________________________________________
Bruce A. Race, FAIA, FAICP, founded
RACESTUDIO in 1994 to personally
serve his clients. Prior to establishing his own practice, he worked
with ELS/Elbasani and Logan Architects for two years and Kaplan
McLaughlin Diaz (KMD) for nine years. As a principal at KMD, he created
an urban design studio that specialized in central district plans,
urban infill projects, transit station area plans, new communities,
institutional and government facility plans and design guidelines.
Mr. Race provides planning and design services to a wide range of
public, institutional and private sector clients. His practice includes
deep portfolios in central district and infill development planning;
comprehensive planning for communities and regions; master planning
public facilities and college campuses; and preparing transit station
area plans. In addition, he has been hired by some of the
country’s foremost developers. Mr. Race has worked throughout the
United States and on-site assignments in Panama, Philippines, Malaysia
and Japan.
Mr. Race brings an implementation emphasis to all assignments where
guidelines and planning proposals are feasible in the marketplace. His
plans emphasize public/private approach to building the community's
public realm. Project sponsors and city staff find Mr. Race's popular
plans and guidelines easy to understand and enforce.
Mr. Race emphasizes client and community participation in developing
planning and design solutions that are popularly understood and
supported. Some of the tools used by Mr. Race to support an interactive
process include gaming, cognitive mapping, environmental walks,
situation analysis and scenario development. He uses these tools within
overall participation programs consisting of workshops, study sessions
and charrettes. Mr. Race utilizes this approach to create ownership for
design solutions among project sponsors. He has been particularly
successful with public sector clients where each of his many planning
assignments has been unanimously approved by policymakers.
Communication of design and planning concepts is enhanced by Mr. Race's
graphic hand and verbal skills. As a professional illustrator, he uses
perspective sketches to demonstrate the likely physical manifestation
of policy and conceptual design choices. His graphics communication
skills have expanded to include digital representations and modeling.
Mr. Race is a good listener and a lively facilitator. He uses these
abilities in client and public forums to focus participants on issues
critical to successful implementation of popular ideas.
